In a lecture entitled "Christian Science: The Universal Remedy," Dr. Albert F. Gilmore, of Boston, Massachusetts, said that in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus gave to the world the perfect compendium for right living. His instructions touched every condition, every situation. One of the more important of the teachings of Jesus, which was fundamental to all success in business, was: "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."
Dr. Gilmore said that many people excused themselves from following this teaching by saying that they had obligations to earn their living and support their families. None could gainsay the weight of these obligations. But were they not perfectly provided for in the promise of Jesus, ". . . and all these things shall be added unto you?" What were "these things" if not the so-called necessities of life?
"In the final analysis, our only business is to establish on earth the Kingdom of God, the reign of good, and in no enterprise which is not embraced in this fundamental can we be truly successful," added Dr. Gilmore. "Jesus was in no doubt as to the character of true service. He declared: 'No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other.' And he summarized his lesson in a sentence, as brief as it is meaningful, 'Ye cannot serve God and mammon.' Here is a perfect rule for the conduct of business. Nothing could excel it in cogency or practicability."
