Arthur Perrow, C. S., of Chicago, lectured on "Christian Science: The Way to Freedom" Monday evening, in the church edifice under the auspices of Third Church of Christ, Scientist. Edward G. Williams introduced the lecturer.
The lecturer spoke substantially as follows:
The greatest privilege of the human race is the ability to think, that is, to think aright. Without thought there would be no conscious existence. The writer of the book of Proverbs in the Bible says of man, "As he thinketh in his heart, so is he" (Prov. 23:7).
May I invite you for this hour to lay aside preconceived opinions, and just let us think, afresh perhaps, at least with an open mind, on the subject of God and man's relationship to Him.
In an attitude of receptivity to things logical, without prejudice or contention, with God-inspired desires, may we quietly meditate on the message of the occasion, prepared especially for our better understanding of that which is Scriptural, logical, progressive, and productive of good only.
In order that our thoughts may be based on a common premise, let us emphasize that Christian Science is primarily Biblical. Mrs. Eddy has written, "As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life" (Science and Health, p. 497).
Jesus made a challenging statement in his words, "Search the scriptures," and he said also, "Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God" (Matt. 22:29). These declarations are significant and very much to the point.
Today we have the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, both of which volumes are much beloved by Christian Scientists. Through the revelation of Truth as now presented to the world in Christian Science, everyone may read and understand the messages of the Bible and comply with its loving invitations for men to accept their established sonship with God here and now, and become aware of their God-ordained freedom in the truth.
Mrs. Eddy has given to the world the spiritual interpretation of the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. Through Christian Science their inspired messages become vitalized, real, and practical in our everyday activities and lead to that consciousness where God is revealed as supreme and infinite good alone, with whom there "is no variableness, neither shadow of turning."
Mrs. Eddy has said: "The Scriptures are very sacred. Our aim must be to have them understood spiritually" (Science and Health, p. 547). The student of Christian Science finds that the Bible is filled with messages of joy and peace and freedom for everyone who understands the way. Within the pages of that book of Life is the recipe for healing any and all disease; there we find the way to meet our every need — in our home, business, and social contacts. The intention of the Bible writers becomes unmistakably clear in the light of Christian Science, all leading to man's natural dominion over the physical senses and all the errors which flesh is heir to.
Christian Scientists are, and later the world will be, grateful for the glorious light of the spiritual interpretation of the Scriptures, furnished by the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures."
Charles P. Steinmetz, the renowned physical scientist and engineer, once said; "Some day people will learn that material things do not bring happiness. . . . The scientists of the world will turn their laboratories over to the study of God and prayer and to the spiritual forces which as yet have hardly been guessed at. When that day comes, the world will see more advancement in one generation than it has in the past four."
The most important and yet the least understood subject, and the one most taken for granted, without much inquiry, is that of God, His nature and purpose. To one who does not understand God, to one who is unacquainted with Him, Deity seems vague, distant, and uncertain.
If men really understood God instead of having mere belief in some kind of supreme being, the resultant behavior would dispel all the confusion and bewilderment of the hour. To know and demonstrate the fact that God is the one infinite divine intelligence would silence the human and mesmeric tendencies toward strife, hatred, wars, and other discords.
Mrs. Eddy answers the question, "What is God?" in these words: "God is incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love" (Science and Health, p. 465). She further states that these synonymous terms "refer to one absolute God" and are "intended to express the nature, essence and wholeness of Deity" (ibid.).
The master Christian said, "This is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent" (John 17:3). To know God and His Christ as manifested by Jesus is, not will be, life eternal. How limiting and mistaken is the belief that God is outlined by physicality or location.
These words in Deuteronomy are impressive in this connection: "Take ye . . . good heed . . . lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image, the similitude of any figure, the likeness of male or female" (Deut. 4:15,16); and from I Kings: "The heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee" (I Kings 8:27).
God is not somewhere, but everywhere, and can thus be conceived of only as infinite Spirit, in whom man lives, and moves, and has his being. The human senses doubt such infinite presence; but even in the midst of confusion or fear, God's presence and power have not changed, for He is All and everywhere. The Psalmist put it, "If I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there" (Ps. 139:8), meaning, of course, that the confusion mortal mind generates — its bewilderment, fears, and anxieties — can be expelled if we accept the divine presence, infinite Mind, as the only consciousness. The statement that God, Truth and Love, is present, even when we seem to be in hell, is a summons to action, to drop our false sense of things and accept only the spiritual, good, and perfect as the real.
Eternity, immortality, is always where Truth is, and Truth is ever present. Man can never depart from immortality. There is no competition in divine Mind or Truth. God made all, and He never made a law or power in opposition to His infinity of good. There is not an organization headed by God and another one headed by a devil or evil, each competing with the other. This supposed and divided partnership is, of course, fallacious and childishly imaginary on the part of the uninformed.
Good is never absent, regardless of the evidence of the physical senses to the contrary. God is "of purer eyes than to behold evil" (Hab. 1:13) are the words of Habakkuk. Divine Love's ever-available benefactions heal, uplift, and sustain men by showing their true being as sons of God. The relationship of Father and son is never really altered, never changed for a moment. The real man, spiritual and eternal, the only man there is, dwells in the divine presence — in Mind, Soul, Spirit, secure from all claims of materiality. To know this means freedom from fears and doubts; it means realization of good and harmony which mortal sense cannot impair. John's statement that "God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him" (I John 4:16) is basic. To dwell in God, who is Love, means a conscious calm and peace.
Divine Mind's purpose for everyone from everlasting to everlasting is good — to have him accept his unchangeable identification with the eternal. Carnal impulses are always unreal, untrue, uncreated, ungodlike, unmanlike, and unnecessary, because they are not from God, good, the source of all that is true and everlasting.
It is interesting that the first chapter of Genesis mentions light many times before man and his reflected God-given dominion appear. There must be light to have reflection. There is no reflection in darkness.
It is natural, because of the eternal relationship between God and man, for us to realize that all our daily needs are at hand. In the words of Mrs. Eddy, "God gives you His spiritual ideas, and in turn, they give you daily supplies" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 307).
Divine Mind, the perfect and only architect of the universe, including man, is and ever will be satisfied with His work. Nothing unlike good can exist where God is the sole author, creator, governor, director, Father-Mother, and He maintains all in eternal harmony.
The writings of the Old and New Testaments, when understood, dismiss any doubt as to the nature of God. Anything short of the proper recognition of Spirit means an arrested realization of divine Mind's ever-loving guidance and direction.
All can prove that the divine presence is here and now, every day, every hour, always in our very midst, ready to adjust every situation in accordance with the eternal law of harmony, of which man is the direct beneficiary.
The world today is far from being unified in its concept of Christ Jesus, the great master Christian — his purpose, his teachings and their usefulness. Jesus was a human whose name was similar to many other men of his day, but the Christ was and is the truth which Jesus taught and demonstrated and which he referred to when he said, "Before Abraham was, I am" (John 8:58).
That which made Christ Jesus different was not his physicality, but his spirituality, that consciousness derived from the divine ever-presence. The inquiry, "Art thou the Christ?" (Luke 22:67) was apparently based on a desire to become acquainted, not with just another man, but with the spirituality which would identify the Christ.
His works were those of healing and freedom, because he knew that disease and limitation, those aggressive suggestions of the carnal mind, are without law or support in the everlasting and infinite kingdom of harmony at hand.
A study of Jesus' words and works in the light of Christian Science makes logical and demonstrable the great teachings Jesus left for his followers. His instructions are clear, unmistakable, and positive, and all based on his understanding of God and His law of harmony, available to all.
In the tenth chapter of Matthew, and as the first of his six clear directives, we find this command of Jesus: "As ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand." The greatest authority on the subject of the kingdom of heaven said in simple and unmistakable terms that preaching on that all-important subject should never depart from the basic truth that the kingdom of heaven is never elsewhere than "at hand" — a demonstrable state of consciousness.
The second directive of the Master is, "Heal the sick." Surely if we seek the presence and will of God at one time, we should not disregard the same presence as available at all times — in the home, in business and elsewhere. To seek God's power some time, would raise the question, why not any time, whether the need seems to be mental or physical.
God's power expressed in His law of adjustment is not limited to time or circumstance. It can never be circumscribed within the confines of human opinion. God's power is infinite and unfailingly available to every honest seeker. That is why Jesus emphasized that we seek that precious presence and power to heal — anything.
In his day leprosy was regarded as a dread and incurable disease. But not so did Jesus classify that discord. He directed that we not merely help, but "cleanse the lepers," that is, restore them to health.
In the same simple and direct language is the fourth of his summarized directives on this occasion when he said, "Raise the dead." It was Jesus who said, "If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death" (John 8:51). He said also, "God is not the God of the dead, but of the living" (Matt. 22:32). More than once when he was called to a scene of death, he changed the occasion from grieving to rejoicing by demonstrating man's natural status, life and freedom. Even Lazarus, buried four days, responded to the Master's understanding of eternal Life.
Paul, who was not an immediate disciple of the Master, so understood the teachings of Christ Jesus that he raised the dead. He declared, in effect, to King Agrippa that raising the dead was natural. He said, "Why should it be thought a thing incredible with you, that God should raise the dead?" (Acts 26:8.) But it is incredible to many because they have accepted without questioning the human belief that life and causation are in and of matter, even though this belief is contrary to Christ Jesus' teachings and demonstrations.
Paul referred to death as the last enemy to be destroyed (I Cor. 15:26). An enemy, so called, never helps, never assists; and so the enemy called death can never be the means, the instrument, for aiding men to come into a realization of the presence of God. There is no limited degree of demonstration in divine Mind. One exemplification of God's ever-available law is not more difficult than another.
The fifth of Jesus' directives is, "Cast out devils." He knew that one should cast out devils or evils in himself and others. Regardless of the mesmeric suggestion to the contrary, evil, discord, is uncreated, unreal, and unknown in the infinity of harmony.
Jesus closed these directives with the statement, "Freely ye have received, freely give," that is, give freely, unstintingly, genuinely, and lovingly; demonstrate your understanding of the presence and power of God to heal, to save mankind from the aggressive suggestions of the carnal mind, which, actually, is no mind at all, because God is the one infinite intelligence.
Man, made in the image and likeness of God, the real man, is forever spiritual, sinless, ageless, deathless. It is this basic view of man which is included in John's statement, "Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God" (I John 3:9).
Our textbook, among many references to man, says, "Man is spiritual and perfect; and because he is spiritual and perfect, he must be so understood in Christian Science" (p. 475). And farther on Mrs. Eddy says: "Man is incapable of sin, sickness, and death. The real man cannot depart from holiness, nor can God, by whom man is evolved, engender the capacity or freedom to sin" (ibid.).
Every truth in the Bible and the Christian Science textbook can be demonstrated. When Jesus admonished that our preaching must be based on the profound truth that the kingdom of heaven is at hand, that Christians should heal the sick, raise the dead, and cast out devils, he knew that each of these commands could be carried out through spiritual understanding, in the same manner as his other provable directions.
When we recognize and consistently accept God as infinite power, we are free to obey each of these directives with the same assurance with which we endeavor to let our light shine, to love our neighbor as ourselves, to be pure in heart. All these loving directives of the Master are equally important, and now obedience to them is made possible through the teachings of Christian Science.
Heaven, harmony, is made for man. It needs man to be complete and to fulfill its divine purpose. Hell is always made to order by mortal mind and remains the product of carnal beliefs — confusion, fear, materiality, all subject to extinction in the presence of Truth. Mrs. Eddy defines heaven as "harmony; the reign of Spirit; government by divine Principle; spirituality; bliss; the atmosphere of Soul" (Science and Health, p. 587).
No one would wish to have delivered to him even the smallest package of hatred, fear, dishonesty, confusion, or other depressing thoughts. If such beliefs could be wrapped up in a package and delivered, anyone would refuse them without hesitancy. Yet, through the subtlety of mortal mind, one accepts them as his own thinking, with the resultant discord and disease that accompany ungodlike qualities of thought. The appearance of these disturbing impulses need no longer be accepted, because Christian Science shows us the way to avoid such deception.
A famous New York surgeon recently wrote: "I have had ample opportunity to observe the effect of lack of spiritual harmony upon the whole organism. Anger, fear, resentment, antagonism, jealousy, hate, and a sense of inferiority or guilt and the like, are all so important in the consideration of a patient's story that I have come to believe they play a predominant role in the majority of even surgical cases. . . .
"This lack of harmony in the realm of the spirit may lead to functional disorder and to organic disease which cannot be cured before adjustment of the underlying conflict. A large majority of the surgical cases which have come to me should never really have come."
This is a frank admission on the part of the physician who has penetrated the surface of things and found the underlying reason for the physical discords enumerated. However, like others working from a material standpoint, he offers no certain remedy for these mental errors, which admittedly lead to serious discord and disease. Here Christian Science comes to the aid of mankind, presenting the everlasting power of divine Mind as the God-established means of restoring and sustaining harmony.
Recognizing men's ability through the power of God, to eliminate discord from their consciousness; to be free from the mesmeric suggestions of confusion, fear, and limitation; to be governed wholly by the law of God, the great master Christian could say, "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect" (Matt. 5:48).
One of the precious gifts to mankind is the ever-present opportunity to pray. The prayer of communion with the divine is the greatest and most productive of all meditations. It brings us to a clearer realization of divine Mind and God's law of harmony. It shows us the open fount of refreshment. This profound subject is covered in the first chapter of our textbook. Its opening sentence is (p. 1), "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God, — a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love." Mrs. Eddy says further, on the same page, "Desire is prayer; and no loss can occur from trusting God with our desires, that they may be moulded and exalted before they take form in words and in deeds."
The Psalmist declared that we should meditate on the law of God day and night, and then prosperity is assured. Paul put it, "Pray without ceasing" (I Thess. 5:17). This seemed impossible and impractical to me until I learned in Christian Science that, in the words of Mrs. Eddy, "Spiritual sense is a conscious, constant capacity to understand God" (Science and Health, p. 209).
Prayer is always individual and never need be unanswered. There is no such thing as unanswered prayer, when one prays aright with both faith and understanding, because the response is already established, awaiting one's acceptance, one's acknowledgment of the divine and only presence which supplies all good.
Prayer does not change the purpose of divine Love. Prayer is knowing the truth as it exists eternally, the truth which Christ Jesus referred to as our source of freedom. Freedom from what? From all the false physical sense testimonies, from all the ills of the flesh. Realization of divine Love's supreme and infinite presence will solve any problem of the world today.
What a privilege is available to everyone to practice daily, hourly, always, his God-established freedom in the truth. Regardless of the subject or situation, it is our privilege to know that confusion is not of God. On the contrary, the divine presence, expressed in spiritual ideas alone, sends forth peace and joy and sustained freedom, never anything discordant.
Right ideas never conflict; and such angels or ideas, emanating from the infinite, all-inclusive divine Mind, are expressed in wisdom and victory over evil. This realization silences all carnal or mortal mind impulses. It replaces any would-be sense of confusion by that of confidence, antagonism by kindness, revenge by forgiveness; in a word, it dispels discord and restores harmony in our social and business and other contacts. Such liberation means clear thinking in one's business pursuits. Such realization of the infinitude of good enables one to entertain "angels unawares," leading to progress and prosperity in all endeavors.
The Bible is unmistakable in its statements that God is our refuge, is our strength, is our help, is at our right hand.
Man is, not shall be, the everlasting image of God. Man is the likeness of God, he is upright, he is holy because God is holy. Man is the son of God, never was nor ever will be less. The recognition of these spiritual truths develops the actual evidence of true existence, of man's God-given freedom from any suggestion of confusion or fear or sin or discord of any kind. The understanding of these truths, accepted and practiced, demonstrates our divine relationship, and by this demonstration man's true dominion is made manifest. God is; man is. The kingdom of God is within you; today is the day of salvation. All these Scriptural statements are demonstrable, and their realization brings the peace that passeth understanding.
A person unacquainted with Christian Science found himself in a very much involved situation physically, morally, and financially. He consulted a Christian Science practitioner, who asked him the question, "What would you do if you were healed immediately?" He answered: "I do not know. But I certainly would go about telling everybody I had found a glorious way out. Of course, I would be willing to pay any price for it." Then he was asked about his false sense of morality and other habits. His reply was, "What has that to do with my healing?"
At this juncture the Christian Scientist explained in detail among other things what Jesus meant when he referred to the pure in heart and said that they "shall see God." This person had a totally erroneous view of Christian Science, but when he changed his false concepts and was willing to leave error or evil for Truth, of course he was healed.
Surely in Biblical language that was a case of "Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts" (James 4:3). But to ask, to seek, with true motives, never fails of fruition, for in the words of Jesus, "Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom" (Luke 12:32) — God-ordained freedom.
Healing the sick through Christian Science is the application of the law of God, which adjusts all things according to the divine Principle of true, harmonious, and everlasting being. The human mind questions healing through spiritual means, but in this as well as in other manifestations of the infinite power of good, it may be stated in Biblical language, "The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned" (I Cor. 2:14).
Man can never be separated from the infinite presence and power of his Father-Mother God. The false testimony of the physical senses must be put off, and then man's true consciousness and like-ness to the divine are revealed. When confronted with the aggressive suggestion of evil of any kind, including lack or disease, at that moment it is the prerogative and privilege of everyone to pause and seek divine Love's ever-present benefactions.
The Biblical promise of centuries ago, "Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you," is just as applicable and effectual today as when first spoken. It means to turn from the physical senses to the spiritual truth of being; it implies possibility and practicability; it is a direct invitation to stop entertaining the suggestions of the carnal mind and, rather, to look towards, seek, draw closer consciously to the divine Mind, Life, Truth, and Love, in which discord is unknown and where man forever dwells in perfect harmony.
There need be no lingering process involved, no delay in asserting and gaining the needed proof of man's spiritual freedom and perfection. In the degree that the eternal presence of divine Love is recognized, will it be proved that the word of God is quick and powerful and dispels any error completely and finally. Good is enthroned, and error has no place nor presence in the infinity of divine Love.
How specific the Bible is regarding the subject of fear, which often underlies confusion and discord. The experiences of the Apostle Paul were such that he could say in the most direct language, "God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind" (II Tim. 1:7). What a joyful statement this is! It indicates clearly that fear is no part of God's creation, no part of infinity, no part of reality, no part of real thinking or consciousness. Fear is, in fact, mesmeric suggestion that lasts only so long as the belief in its supposed operations continues. Instead, we are assured in this and many similar Biblical statements that God's precious gift to his every son is that of power, spiritual power, which nullifies any claim of presence or strength from the carnal or human sense of things.
Just as definitely are we assured here that God has given us a sound mind, untouched by suggestions of weakness or sickness or failure. And Mrs. Eddy points to the method of proving this when she writes: "Rise in the strength of Spirit to resist all that is unlike good. God has made man capable of this, and nothing can vitiate the ability and power divinely bestowed on man" (Science and Health, p. 393).
The Bible and the textbook of Christian Science point to the naturalness of spiritual healing, the God-given ability by which men can demonstrate dominion over all disease, the flesh, and evil. There is significance attached to the first reference to man in the book of Genesis, which says that God gave him dominion over all things. Man and his God-given dominion are inseparable, because man forever reflects the Life that is God, the power that is Truth, the infinity of good that is always operative.
Thank God that the presence and power to heal are again restored to the world in Christian Science! Once again the statement may be made with renewed emphasis, "Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation" (II Cor. 6:2), and again, in the words of Paul, "The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death" (Rom. 8:2).
Salvation means being saved from all the evil suggestions of the carnal mind. It means dwelling in the secret place of the Most High — secret from the carnal mind, but known to divine Love, the place where no evil can enter, any more than darkness can obtrude into a well-lighted room. Salvation is never after a while, never a matter of reaching a certain place or location. It is not a matter of going; it is a matter of being. It is the recognition of that consciousness referred to by Jesus when he said, "Behold, the kingdom of God is within you" (Luke 17:21).
The only thing that a human being needs to be saved from is false thinking. Spiritual man is already saved, forever intact. In the divine economy there is no change from good to evil, from truth to error, from harmony to discord. Reality remains forever harmonious and perfect. Its opposite, suggested by the false testimony of the human senses, is a counterfeit, to be exterminated when the light of spirituality dawns, expelling every error and revealing the unchanged and unchangeable presence of God's infinite goodness.
In the God-ordained atmosphere of the Most High, man abides forever in security, peace, and reflected wholeness. This is infinitely more than social security of which we hear so much today. It is eternal and fixed freedom from all the claims of limitation. Earthly parents do everything to protect and keep their children upright and happy. How much more does God, our Father-Mother, maintain His offspring through His all-power, in abundant life and unchangeable perfection. What can hinder such God-ordained purpose? Nothing!
Christian Scientists have a deep feeling of love and gratitude for the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, whose great gift to the world can never be dimmed or obscured. Her zeal and love for all mankind, and above all, her love for God and His Christ, led to her discovery of Christian Science, the full revelation of the glorious truth which Jesus said would make us free.
Deeply religious from her youth, asking questions of her elders, and with the assistance of a brother, studying the Biblical messages in their original Hebrew and Greek, she experienced the refreshment and joy of the Scriptural promises.
There are several biographies of Mrs. Eddy to be found in public and other libraries, as well as in the Christian Science Reading Rooms throughout the world. Each one contains inspiring messages as to the unselfish lifework of this great woman whose benefactions toward humanity will remain forever in the pages of immortal history. Mrs. Eddy accepted the Biblical urge, "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth" (II Tim. 2:15).
It is not sufficient merely to be good, that is, helpful, kind, and loving toward our fellow man, as taught and practiced by many. In the light of the revelation of truth we must tread the paths of spiritual progress. We must put on the whole armor of God and work for the healing of every discord individually and collectively.
We must accept the whole garment of joyous responsibility for the realization of heavenly peace here, now, and forever, among individuals, groups, and nations. We must validate the words and works of the great master Christian, Christ Jesus, whose purpose was "on earth peace, good will toward men" (Luke 2:14). That peace is to be established and made permanent by our individual acceptance and application of the law of God, which can never again be obscured because it is now fully clarified by the revelation of Christian Science.
Mrs. Eddy established The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, which today has more than 2900 branches throughout the world. She wrote the textbook of Christian Science and several other books, founded the various Christian Science periodicals, provided for lectures on Christian Science and for class instruction.
And, to make clear and unmistakable the God-inspired procedure for all students and workers in this great vineyard of Truth, Mrs. Eddy provided the Church Manual, containing the Rules and By-Laws which, she says, "sprang from necessity, the logic of events, — from the immediate demand for them as a help that must be supplied to maintain the dignity and defense of our Cause; hence their simple, scientific basis, and detail so requisite to demonstrate genuine Christian Science" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 148).
The realization of the Biblical promise that the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of God awaits our acceptance and application of the truths about God and man which have been made available to all through Mrs. Eddy's discovery and declaration of Christian Science.
This knowledge of God is the way of freedom — freedom from fear, from sin and sickness, freedom from limitation and lack. And so, as Mrs. Eddy lovingly states in Science and Health (p. 227) "Citizens of the world, accept the 'glorious liberty of the children of God,' and be free!"
